Panelist at the Plenary Session THE METRICS OF IMPROVEMENT

Wednesday, 28 September, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Simon Miller is General Manager of the Cool Farm Alliance (CFA). The CFA is a community-interest company that owns and operates the Cool Farm Tool an online calculator for farmers to measure and manage sustainability on the farm. CFA members include major food retailers and manufacturers, agricultural input suppliers and NGOs – working alongside leading universities – to create a rare coalition of stakeholders collaborating to progress assessment of greenhouse gas emissions and on-farm biodiversity. The Cool Farm Tool is free for farmers.

Simon leads the Cool Farm team, working closely with members and academic partners to translate the latest science into the online tool. His recent projects include working with Wageningen University and Danone in the development of a new Cool Farm dairy module, and with GFZ Potsdam to incorporate water scarcity indicators within the tool.

Simon has a background working on FMCG supply chains, from farm right through to consumers and end of life. Simon has worked advising farmers on Cross Compliance; conducted one of the first PAS2050 carbon footprints on beer production; and continues to work closely with major brands and retailers in the UK on a range of sustainable issues. He holds BSc Biology and Msc Environmental Sustainability.

In order to meet the targets set at COP21, agriculture has a critical role to play. The Cool Farm Alliance wishes to support the Climate Smart Agriculture movement by sharing our science and tools with partners - such as GLOBALG.A.P. - so that metrics can supplement practice-based measures on the journey towards lower carbon farming.
